Stop and Smell the Roses: 5 Scent-Related Canine Enrichment Activities to Try at Home!

February is all about love, and what better way to embrace the season than by engaging our most powerful sense—smell! Think about it: the warm, inviting aroma of your favorite meal, the soft flicker of a scented candle, and, of course, the sweet fragrance of roses—all hallmarks of romance and affection.

As devoted dog lovers, we want to share that same love with our four-legged family members, but did you know that for dogs, love is literally in the air? With a sense of smell up to 100,000 times stronger than ours, their noses are the gateway to their world—and their hearts!

Scent work helps strengthen the bond between dogs and their handlers, builds confidence, and provides a deeply enriching experience. That’s why we introduced Sniff Central, our brand-new scent room at the Daycare and Training Center! Here, dogs can explore a variety of scents, from calming essential oils to delicious favorites like peanut butter and other tasty treats.

However, the fun doesn’t stop at our facility! Creating scent-based enrichment for your pup at home is easier than you think. Want to give it a try? We’re sharing our top five scent-related enrichment activities so you can bring the magic of Sniff Central to your own home!

The Snuffle Mat Treasure Hunt

Encourage your pup to use their nose to “hunt” for hidden treats!

Materials Needed:

  • A snuffle mat (or a DIY version using a towel or fleece strips)
  • Small, high-value treats or kibble

How to Play:

Scatter treats or kibble throughout the snuffle mat, tucking them into the fabric folds. Let your dog sniff, search, and forage for their tasty rewards! This taps into their natural scavenging instincts while keeping them engaged and entertained.

The Scent Trail Adventure

Create a scent-based trail leading to a surprise at the end!

Materials Needed:

  • Small treats with a strong aroma (cheese, peanut butter, etc.)
  • A designated space for the trail, such as a yard or hallway

How to Play:

Place small treats in a trail leading to a final reward (a special treat, toy, or even you hiding with praise!). You can make it more challenging by spacing the treats farther apart or hiding them under objects. This is a great way to engage your pup’s problem-solving skills!

The Muffin Tin Challenge

Turn an ordinary muffin tin into an exciting scent game!

Materials Needed:

  • A muffin tin of any size or shape
  • Tennis balls or other small toys
  • Treats or kibble

How to Play:

Place treats in some of the muffin tin cups, then cover all the cups with tennis balls or another small toy of our choice. Let your dog sniff out which cups hold the treats and figure out how to remove the balls to claim their reward. This is an easy, budget-friendly nose work game!

The Scented Towel Roll-Up Game

Make a simple, interactive sniffing challenge with just a towel!

Materials Needed:

  • A large towel
  • Treats or kibble

How to Play:

Sprinkle treats along the length of a towel, then roll it up loosely. Encourage your pup to unroll the towel using their nose and paws to find all the hidden treats. You can increase the difficulty by rolling it tighter or folding it into sections.

An Essential Oil Scent Introduction

Allow your dog to explore new, calming scents!

Materials Needed:

  • Dog-safe essential oils (lavender, chamomile, vanilla, etc.)
  • Cotton balls or fabric squares
  • Small containers or cups

Dab a few drops of a dog-safe essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in a small container. Let your dog sniff and explore the scent. Over time, you can introduce different scents and even create a scent-identification game by having them “find” the matching scent!

Whether your pup is enjoying the enriching scents at Sniff Central or exploring new aromas at home, engaging their nose is a simple yet powerful way to enhance their well-being. By trying out these five scent-related enrichment activities, you can create a more fulfilling environment for your furry friend while strengthening your bond. So, grab some treats, get creative, and let your pup’s nose lead the way to a world of fun and discovery!
